The following 2-minute video, courtesy of Sandy Hook Promise, a non-profit organisation founded and run by several people whose family members were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, is an advert tackling the awareness and prevention of gun violence in schools. Presenting itself as a sweet, charming look at the unexpected relationship struck between two pupils scribbling messages back and forth on a school desk, “Evan” culminates in something much more hard-hitting and poignant. In an imaginative, evocative manner, the issue of awareness, or lack thereof, is certainly emphasised.
As highlighted by such incidents at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 and Columbine High School in 1999, school shootings are on the rise in the US and becoming something of an epidemic. In 2015, there were 64 school shootings.
