Russell Powell’s Naturalistic Hand-Stamping Portraits Are Producing Mesmerising Results

Russell Powell is a California-based artist who has developed his own, unique style of producing works of art, that of painting beautifully intricate, somewhat hyperrealistic portraits, notably of famous figures such as Robin Williams, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, on the palm of his hand and then transferring them onto paper, the results of which are transcendent and spellbinding.

Referring to his technique as “hand stamping”, Powell has honed his craft while working as a kindergarten teacher in San Jose and using his pupils as inspiration. Describing his style, Powell’s website states: “The lines of his hand are left exposed and become part of his compositions. His subjects come out of his own imagination.”
