In June 2017, China revealed its forward-thinking plans for Liuzhou Forest City, the world’s first self-contained, pollution-consuming forest city. Designed by Italian architectural firm Stefano Boeri Architetti, the eco-friendly, 342-acre metropolis will consist of more than 70 buildings, e.g. schools, hospitals and homes, all of which will be encased in 1 million plants and 40,000 trees. Such foliage is expected to consume 57 tonnes of pollutants and 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum, as well as producing 900 tonnes of oxygen and homing displaced wildlife in the process.
The project comes off the back of Stefano Boeri’s Vertical Forest. In 2014, Boeri completed work on two residential towers in Milan which are wrapped in the equivalent of 5 acres of vegetation. Said towers are estimated to remove 15–17.5 tonnes of airborne soot each year.
