In August 2016, Dick Van Dyke, while accompanied by a cappella group The Vantastix, surprised a delighted crowd at a Denny’s restaurant in Santa Monica, California, with a rendition of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, the Academy Award-nominated song from the 1968 Ken Hughes-directed/Roald Dahl-written hit musical of the same name.
Looking like a man who has no intention of slowing down, Van Dyke, 90, whose illustrious career, including such hits as Mary Poppins (1964) and Bye Bye Birdie (1963), in entertainment has spanned almost seven decades, proved to onlookers on an otherwise typical morning at the pancake house giant why he is considered a Disney legend. Sharing the video, which has since gone viral, on his Facebook page, he quipped: “Breakfast at Denny’s, with a side of grits makes me want to sing!!”
