Matrix-Style Flipbook Animation

The following video, which was a TV advert entitled Flipbook for the LG Viewty mobile phone in South Korea, shows a flipbook animation — a book of pictures creating the illusion of movement when pages are flipped quickly — which is played out in the style of The Matrix, the Wachowskis’ 1999 science-fiction/action film.

Displayed at mainly 30 frames per second, a common frame rate, the video follows the journey of a bullet having been loaded and fired, along the way piercing Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and causing a fiery explosion. At one point, 120 frames per second are introduced to produce the effect of “bullet time”, the visual effect as popularised in the 1999 blockbuster.
